On her site where she matches up MBA graduates and employers, Maggie Austring has job-seeking candidates fill out a field in their on-line applications to identify what annual gross salary they expect. When she launched the site last May, she put in a $30,000 (US$24,000) category, never thinking anyone would fill in that low a number.

Austring has not only seen people checking off $30,000, she has now seen a rise in that category and wonders what would have happened had she put in a $20,000 option. The downturn in the economy has tempered the salary expectations of MBA holders who are seeking jobs.

According to Austring, President of MBAjobs.ca, salary expectations have gone down by an average of $10,000 to $20,000, with many asking for $30,000 less than what they envisioned they would be asking when they began their studies.

“Two years ago, MBAs were hot items with a lot of employers wanting to hire people right away at $70,000.” Now, she says many potential employees have not dared to ask for that kind of salary and many of her candidates are now asking for $40,000 to $50,000.

Yet the lowered salary expectations have not emerged from any mass layoffs of MBAs. While many companies are reluctant to bring in high-priced middle management, that is just part of the story. This race to the bottom seems to be coming from the candidates themselves, whose collective confidence has been shaken by all the other dismal news and whose lowered expectations are being jumped on by firms looking for a bargain.

Last Christmas, Dil Vashi began to reassess his chances of immediately working as a financial analyst or a management consultant. With a freshly-minted MBA from Jacksonville State University in Alabama, where he had won a business scholarship to assistant-coach in their golf programme, the 24-year-old had spent the previous three months looking for work to no avail.

Vashi had sent his CV to about 120 potential employers, having no preference for any particular industry. He was not receiving any firm offers and was having to work at his old summer job in a factory, where he earned $9 an hour. He was thinking perhaps it might be best if he got his foot in the door at a bank by applying for a teller job.

As it turned out, Vashi never did apply to the bank. In February, he began a new job working with an outfit that buys and sells micro businesses. The work he’s doing, delving into the books and operations of businesses whose products range from fertiliser to funerals, touches on the financial analysis and management consultancy he had been looking for

But he is earning a lot less than he had ever expected: his base salary is $42,000, a far cry from the $60,000 that he had expected when he was still in school.

In this changing environment, many MBA holders may need to look at their degrees not as a ticket to a great starting salary, but as a way to provide a company with some needed skills they would welcome in a difficult economy. That is according to Kirk Hill, who runs a career centre out of the business school at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.

“The MBA is not a guarantee to a high salary. But it helps open doors,” he explained.

Hill, who is also the president-elect of the Canadian Association of Career Educators, sees an upside to the situation, saying with lower salaries many small companies will now be better able to compete with the large ones for valuable MBA holders.

Austring says not all provinces nor all industries are experiencing lowered MBA salary expectations. Her own province, Saskatchewan, has not experienced the employment free-fall of Ontario and has seen job-seekers able to demand better salaries.

Hill says the Vancouver region has also been insulated from some of the lowered salary expectations of MBAs from other parts of the country. He cites several factors, including an increase in infrastructure spending, the approaching 2010 Olympic games and “a technology sector that’s holding up.” And there are other pockets of insulation around the country, namely the niche retail sector, crown corporations, utilities and construction.

Mark Gibson is bucking the trend and has actually raised his salary expectations. The 51-year-old Montrealer who graduated with an executive MBA from the Université du Québec à Montréal in 2005 was recently grossing $45,000 at a start-up company that distributed systems for heating up hot-water tanks with solar-thermal power.

It ran out of money and had to close but he is now working on resurrecting it and is on the cusp of seeing a government subsidy announced that would potentially shoot up public demand for his product. Having worked for a year helping run the business and with a background in start-ups, he is now the right person for the job, and expects to earn a $60,000-a-year salary.

While most MBAs will be asking for lower salaries throughout this economic downturn, those who are in the right province, in the right industry or have found themselves to be the person for the job can still find themselves with the salary that those who invested in an MBA had always expected from the outset.

* Philip Fine is Canadian correspondent for University World News. In an era when salary freezes and layoffs are the order of the day, a school that can deliver the goods – decent-paying jobs for the vast majority of graduates – is golden.

If it can do so without charging an arm and a leg, well, so much the better. That’s why Business Week undertook an extensive analysis of ROI for the 50 top schools in its 2009 Best Undergraduate Business Schools ranking.

The results were enlightening: while the top-ranked private schools such as Notre Dame and Wharton get all the attention, it is the big state schools (and their lower tuition costs) that fare the best on this measure.

To determine ROI, Business Week gathered information from all 50 schools about their annual tuition and required fees as well as the median starting salaries for 2008 graduates, then divided the salary figure by the annual costs to calculate “salary per tuition dollar” – or bang for the buck.

Overall, public universities did far better than elite private schools, averaging $5.98 in pay for every tuition dollar spent, compared with $1.87 for the privates…

A glance at the ROI ranking might lead some to believe that the public schools are hands-down winners. But private schools, while faring poorly on the ROI measure due to higher costs, also have a lot to offer – features that might trump ROI for many prospective students as they shopping around for a program.

So how can a student justify paying up to quadruple the tuition to attend a private institution? For one thing, private school programs, many of which have rich endowments, often have more resources to spend on instruction, which translates into better student-teacher ratios and smaller classes.

By Jenny George*

It pays to be careful when interpreting the vast increases in salaries that MBA graduates are said to enjoy once they have obtained their degree.

The reported rises, published by the UK-based Financial Times each year as part of its business school ranking data, are driven by purchasing power parity, industry choice and personal work experience. But there are issues you need to be aware of regarding the way the surveys are actually put together.

The first of these is the use of purchasing power parity (PPP) to convert different currency rates and compare salaries between countries. PPP is the exchange rate that equates the price of a basket of identical traded goods and services in two countries.

This is one of the reasons Chinese schools appear to show enormous pre-and post-MBA salary increases among their graduates of 100-200%.

Although that is interesting, it does not necessarily indicate what is happening with those students because often their pre-MBA salary was earned in an area where the cost of living was quite low, for example in a rural area, while their post-MBA salary has been earned in an expatriate company, still in China but in a city such as Shanghai or Beijing where the cost of living is much higher.

In the past, the way PPPs were calculated tended to advantage schools in China, with some jumping to very high rankings. But newer PPP calculations are likely to see that trend reverse. This means Chinese business schools should reflect a different salary increase ranking next time.

Another reason for massive salary rises has to do with people who have raw talent and skills but who go straight into the financial industry after graduation.

Business schools such as Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and New York University are traditional feeder schools that used to send their new MBA graduates to Wall Street. But the finance industry is no longer hiring as many graduates, nor are salaries at the same kinds of levels as they were previously, given the present economic climate, so some of those increases will be much less visible in the next rankings as well.

The third factor that affects salary increases concerns the amount of work experience people have when they start their MBA.

There is an optimal window of time to get the absolute maximum salary increase out of an MBA and it tends to be relatively early in a graduate’s career. It is not necessarily when an MBA graduate earns the most but it is the time when an MBA graduate enjoys the biggest salary bump.

Current statistics reveal that executive MBA programs, which traditionally admit people at considerably more senior levels, have much lower salary increases, even when compared against other MBA programs at the same university.

This is because someone who has been working for eight to 10 years, and has been identified as a future leader, will probably already be on a high salary. The Executive MBA will help their career, it may even deliver the same dollar increase in salary enjoyed by a new graduate with an MBA, but it will not show the huge percentage boost that the new MBA graduate receives earlier in his or her working life.

This does not mean that it is a not a good idea to undertake an MBA; it just means that at different levels, people have different outcomes and expectations about their post-MBA salaries. In fact, the return on investment of an MBA is about the difference in salary (in dollars) that an MBA graduate can expect to get for what it cost to get the degree.

This also partly explains why salary increases in different countries look different. Each country tends to have different expectations about when people should do an MBA and so percentage salary increases are correspondingly different.

In Australia and Europe, the average work experience before starting an MBA is eight to 10 years. In the US, it is more common for people to undertake an MBA with only about five years experience while in India it is only one or two years.

These vast differences typically mean that business schools in those countries that admit students with high levels of work experience will have lower post-MBA salary increases among their graduates.

One final point: be careful not to view salary increases reported by a school you are thinking of enrolling in as applicable to everyone. Some people who bump up those averages are on a specific career route that is not necessarily for everyone.

For example, some students plan to go straight from their MBA into a high-paid, high-stress consulting or finance job, where they expect to stay for maybe two to four years, before moving on to something else.
Such people give the business school an immediate extremely high salary hit. But this is a young person’s game and not a career path that every student wants.

Sensible schools and wise students value the diversity of career options available in the world and make sure the fit between an organisation and a student is the right one.

This is the best way to produce leaders of business, governments and other organisations who are passionate and committed.

How should you use salary increase data when thinking about the return on investment in an MBA?

The value of an MBA degree will depend on many things, including the amount of work experience you have and the salary you are already earning.

Suppose an MBA graduate paid $75,000 to do the course and their salary then rises from $150,000 to $225,000.

This is only a 50% increase in salary yet they will have paid back the cost of the investment in the course in the first year. Contrast that with a less experienced MBA graduate who paid $75,000 to do the course and whose salary rose from $50,000 to $100,000.

They have recorded a 100% increase in their salary but it will actually take them longer than a year to pay back the cost of the investment.

The calculations are more complicated when you factor in the loss of earnings while studying for an MBA as this will be greater for people who were on higher pre-MBA salaries. Then there is the length of time remaining in a graduate’s career: younger people who tackle an MBA at an earlier age will enjoy the benefits of the investment in their education over a much longer period.

Two top international schools of management, France’s HEC and the American MIT Sloan, have signed a strategic partnership agreement to develop exchanges and collaboration through educational, research, professional and cross-cultural activities between students and faculty.

Under the global academic alliance the two institutions will create a double-degree program between HEC’s MBA or MSc and MIT Sloan’s new Master of Science in Management Studies or MSMS.

The highly selective MSMS will begin in the 2009-10 academic year and will include 20 to 25 international students who have completed or are completing MBAs or equivalent degrees abroad. Eventual enrolments will be no more than 50. Other foreign participants in the MSMS are Tsinghua University in Beijing; Fudan University in Shanghai, and the Sungkyynkwan University School of Business in Seoul.

Plans under the HEC-MIT Sloan agreement also include an exchange program for MBA students to study for a semester in the partner school, and an exchange scheme for teachers to carry out joint research in disciplines such as strategy, product development and leadership. These will include joint doctoral committees for supervising theses in each institution.

HEC (Hautes Études Commerciales) Paris is France’s leading management school and was ranked among the top six business school in Europe by the Financial Times 2008 listing. Founded in 1881, the HEC today has a permanent faculty of 105 professors and 3,200 students of more than 80 nationalities who live on its campus at Jouy-en-Josas outside Paris.

MIT Sloan, the school of management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has students from more than 60 countries and is an academic world leader in innovation in management theory and practice. Its MBA programme is globally ranked seventh by the Financial Times.

Announcing the alliance in December 2008, David C. Schmittlein, the John C. Head III Dean of MIT-Sloan, said: “As management education and knowledge become more global, there are limits to what any one school can do in the world.” Schmittlein said the world needed new leaders in management more than ever, and the partnership would “provide students and professors with the global perspective they need to succeed”.

HEC Dean Bernard Ramanantsoa said the intercontinental partnership provided both institutions with the opportunity to produce “truly international leaders.”

Valérie Gauthier, Associate Dean of the HEC MBA program responsible for developing the joint project said: “This partnership is a real opportunity for HEC to increase its reputation in the United States and throughout the world, and for our students to benefit from a double education, in France and in the US, with two key degrees and access to two networks at HEC Paris and MIT Sloan.”

To start with, many business schools around the world are ranked by media organizations such as the UK-based Financial Times, the US BusinessWeek, the Wall Street Journal, the Economist Intelligence Unit and many others.

Are rankings important? They are only insofar as they are a single number that draws together a whole range of quality measures.

It tends to be true that higher-ranked schools are likely to attract better students and faculty members, and that they will probably indicate something about the placement and career prospects of people who graduate from the program.

But while you should not be too concerned about rankings, you should care about the underlying factors they measure. One of these is student quality: a huge amount of the education you get in the classroom will depend on the quality of the interactions you have with other people, and those interactions are dependent on those others.

Good programs ensure there is diversity in the classroom, including industry, cultural and general life experience diversity. Diversity is all about making sure you get exposed to people you can learn from.

For example, some people in your class may have been involved in a corporate merger. Having someone in your group with this experience can be a great learning opportunity for you.

You should also care about whether the people around you are bright – and that is where the Graduate Management Admissions Test comes in. The GMAT is a computer adaptive standardized test for measuring aptitude to succeed academically in graduate business studies.

Those who do well on the test and join your class will make learning so much more fun as they are likely to be quick, sharp, capable and competent.

These people are going to form your future network and, because you should care about the value of your education in 30 years time, you should also care about the network you will take with you.

Who are the academics?

The second thing you should care about is the quality of the faculty who are teaching you. Look for academics who are really good teachers. Finding that out normally requires sitting in one of their classes or talking to other students.

If you are an international student or it is physically impossible for you to experience a class first-hand, trawl web sites for some class videos. Ask the business school how to get in touch with current students, then ask these students real questions.

Now that blogging has become such a phenomenon, you can often do a simple Google search to find the unvarnished opinions of current students though a blog.

You also need to find out if the academics actually care about business. Do they have regular consulting relationships or lots of contacts with the business community?

Then again, does the school itself have strong business connections? How many times do business people come into the school to speak? Does the school have student clubs that are engaged with business and facilitated by faculty members?

There are other questions in this vein: do the career placement services network with the business community? Do students get the opportunity to do real-life projects that are actually based in companies and on live cases?

Research quality

The last thing about faculty is that they should be engaged in interesting, relevant and cutting-edge research. Research is important because it demonstrates the academics are innovative leaders in their discipline. This helps the university’s brand name – and your MBA brand name - and reassures that the things you are learning are at the forefront of the knowledge in that area.

Assessing research quality is a much more difficult question. So you should find out if the faculty members are engaged at high levels within their discipline. For example, are they a part of or a fellow of a society in their discipline, or are they an editor of a journal?

Many faculty members now put their research papers online. They are not always the easiest things to read but you can get a sense of what topics they are deeply engaged in.

Getting a job

The third thing you should think about in your quest to find the right business school is how effective it will be in helping you in your search for work. Most schools will help you refine what you want to do, assist you to think through your career moves, then support you in that process.

You should also look for schools that have good placement statistics. These statistics form a regular part of rankings and as schools do collect that data, ask for it.

Find out what percentage of students get jobs within three months of graduating. For the top schools, those statistics are almost always in the 90s. And ask how many students have a job by graduation date: this uncovers whether recruiters come on campus as well.

You might also be interested in the percentage salary increase from pre-MBA jobs to post-MBA jobs. But you need to know that statistic much more precisely than the average because the average is going to include a whole lot of people who may not look like you. So ask whoever supplies the data if you can drill down to locate people who are much the same as you.

For example, if you have three years work experience, you come from Asia and you want to work in the IT sector, then there will be a particular profile of what normally happens to people like you, and what their salary increase normally looks like, so ask about that.

You can also get salary increases from rankings although you will see that the rankings published by the Financial Times – a large international ranking exercise – list salaries three years after graduating. This can mean huge increases from pre and post-MBA salaries of 100-150 per cent for some exceptional years and top schools.

Most schools also measure salaries for the first job after graduation and this tends to deliver increases of 30-60 per cent.

Friends for life

The alumni network is another thing you should think about. How engaged are the former students? Does the school have international alumni chapters in parts of the world where you wish to work? Do the alumni return to the school and engage with current students?

This MBA brand value on your resume is going to be much brighter in 15 years time if the school has an engaged group of people who care about it and support it, and who are also donors.

Curriculum matters

Finally, you need to evaluate the curriculum. Most business schools have fairly similar curricula because MBAs are now a well-known, mature degree.

You don’t need a huge amount of innovation in the basics of the curriculum but you should look for innovation in the electives. And you should also look for innovation in the extra-curricular activities that the school offers.

There should be a solid business education across a wide variety of functions and disciplines. And students should have the opportunity to explore topics such as marketing in more depth as an elective or in the suite of extra-curricular activities.

Confirm that these options are available by asking whether specialists are invited to speak on fields you are interested in. Are the student clubs focused on both social and industry events? And does what you are interested in mesh with what the school is offering?

Finding the right business school is not always easy. Much of your legwork will be based on trawling the web but completing an MBA is a huge investment in resources and time, so it is worth your effort to get it right.

*Associate Professor Jennifer George is associate dean of academic programs at the Melbourne Business School www.mbs.edu

The French consulting company SMBG created a special offshoot in 2007 to provide students around the world with assistance in selecting the best universities in particular areas. At an international conference in Paris in November, 2008, the company announced the world’s top 27 business schools after an extensive investigation had identified the most important 1000 schools from around the globe.

Eduniversal nominated the leading 27 schools – three drawn from each of nine geographic regions - following research that identified the top 1000 business schools. Further analysis reduced this number to 100 and from this group the final 27 were selected with the assistance of the deans of the 1,000 schools.

The full list of the 27 schools and their regions can be seen here. Many of the world’s best-known schools, including the London Business School, the Hong Kong UST Business School and INSEAD, the international graduate business school with campuses in France and in Singapore, scored a place in the final Eduniversal list.

Overall, the selection appeared reasonably consistent with other rankings of business schools by groups such as the Financial Times, BusinessWeek and AsiaWeek. But there were some significant differences because of the various methods used by the media groups to assess the schools and the fact that many of the rankings focus on only one aspect of a school, such as its MBA programmes.

The top nine business schools out of the 27, one from each of the nine different regions, were the University of Auckland Business School (Oceania), Harvard Business School (Northern America), ITESM-EGADE Monterrey (Latin America), Copenhagen Business School (Western Europe), University of Economics in Prague (Eastern Europe), Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (Central Asia), Hong Kong UST School of Business and Management (Far Eastern Asia), Tel Aviv University Leon Recanati Graduate School of Business Administration (Middle East) and University of Cape Town UBT Graduate School of Business (Africa).

Under the Eduniversal system, the 1000 business schools identified as the “most important” were allocated one to five “palms”. In the first league, with five palms, are 100 schools graded as the best universal business schools with major international influence.

As with the overall 1000 schools, the US dominates the selection of the 100 schools with 29 in the list. That compares with seven for Britain and France, six for Canada, five for Australia and four for South Korea. China and Japan managed to get three of their schools into the list. The names of the 100 schools can be seen here.

The 200 schools in league two have four palms and are considered top business schools internationally. League three, with three palms, has 400 schools considered to be excellent business schools nationally with strong continental links.

League 4, with two palms, has 200 schools rated as good business schools with regional influence while league five, one palm, has 100 schools in universities with local influence.

The company says the list of 1000 schools will be reviewed two years after its first edition, in the last quarter of 2009. After that, the list will be reviewed every four years.

SMBG specialises in reference services and publications for educational and higher educational institutions. It says its Eduniversal initiative is “the first stone of a global federation of education”.

Identifying the “best” business schools

Eduniversal used a range of criteria in selecting its 1000 “best” business schools from around the world. To see the list of countries and the 1000 schools, (See full list below or here)

The initial basis focused on five evaluation criteria:

* National educational expenditure per inhabitant;

* GDP of the country where the school was located;

* Population size;

* Number of students in higher education;

* The “local educative landscape”, established according to the number of secondary schools and “the historical dimension of the national educative tradition”;

Other information taken into account during the selection process included:

*Accreditations obtained by the business schools, their level of state recognition, main rankings by media organisations, participation in international academic associations, the opinions of international experts, networks of partners and deans, and principle studies published.

* Advice from an international committee composed of nine experts, each recognised in their own academic communities and internationally.

* Current or past deans of prestigious business schools, directors of international academic associations, and members of deans’ networks.

The company says a further principle used in grading the schools was based on their level of “international influence”. As well, a survey was undertaken to obtain the professional recommendations of the deans of the 1000 business schools along with the opinions of recruiters, and current and former student “communities”.

Between October 2007 and March 2008, the deans in each of the regions were asked which business schools they would recommend to anyone wishing to study business education. Their vote was not mandatory for each country and they could only recommend 50% of the academic institutions selected.

The regional tables show that in the UK, for instance, the top business school with international influence is the London Business School with a recognition rate of 675 of the 1000 deans, followed by the London School of Economics with 547 and the Cranfield School of Management at 464.

In the US, the top school is the Harvard Business School with 731references, followed by MIT (640) and Stanford University (577). The top French business school with international influence is INSEAD with 644 references. By contrast the leading Chinese business schools of Tsinghua University, Peking University and Fudan University were rated by only a third of the deans.

Why nominate a top 1000 schools?

Eduniversal Managing Director Cécile Escape says it is easy nowadays to know all the “best” business schools with the help of regular rankings published by financial newspapers and magazines. But the company argues that this information is often only accessible to a minority of students and, in any case, usually only certain rankings such as MBAs are covered.

Escape says that not all countries in the world are targeted and not all schools are selected by international higher education experts or evaluated by the deans, such as those that participated in the Eduniversal rankings.

“By what means can students immediately identify the business school for them – wherever that may be in the world – when the existing rankings only cover a tiny area when considered on a global level?” Escape asks.

She says that if information sources do exist to answer students’ questions, they are often published in such dense and diverse volumes it is almost impossible for student to form an objective opinion from among such a large choice.

Eduniversal’ s approach, she says, is to give a complete and reliable overview, to provide information about all types of schools, the courses they offer at all levels and in every region on Earth – “no matter what the students’ financials resources are or wherever they want to go”.

“This is the task that the Eduniversal parent company, SMBG, set itself in creating its offshoot – the first online tool for providing orientation advice via a map of the best opportunities and thus giving a head start to students, HR departments and those working within the academic sphere”.

With increasing globalisation, many students want to study abroad while big employers are themselves becoming increasingly international and global recruitment is accelerating and generating a skills deficit, Escape says.

“For business schools, internationalisation is becoming essential in the recruitment of foreign students and teachers, and in the development of exchange programmes,” she says. “Business schools have begun to compete with other top universities across the spectrum and they need to improve their visibility to increase their attractiveness and become the unsurpassable global institutions of choice to all companies operating internationally.

The official selection

Using an array of academic selections and publications, Eduniversal applies a“meta-system” to synthesise all the information about the business schools and then, finally, to present its findings to students around the world. The company says this should enable students to choose a business school or university best for them, depending on the region where they live and where they would like to study.

Arguing that the international influence of a school is the main indicator of its value, the company’s researchers used this information to compile a register of 1,000 business schools. In this first selection, the 1000 schools were drawn from the nine principal zones across the planet that cover a total of 151 countries, inhabited by more than 97% of the world’s population:

“The aim of the selection is not necessarily to include the 1,000 best schools but the most important 1000 schools based on a method of quotas,” Eduniversal says on its website. “Being a part of the official selection signifies that every effort is made by the school and country concerned in favour of its national, regional and international influence.”

International influence

“For Eduniversal, the international influence is the capacity of a business school to make a student valuable – and thus to improve their employability both in their own country and internationally,” the company says in a release describing its system of identifying the world’s top business schools.

It says this degree of influence can, in certain cases, be limited to a local dimension in a country where the business school represents the only opportunity available to students. The presence of such schools in the official selection is also a way of encouraging them “to develop their efforts in favour of their international influence”.

“To establish this indicator, Eduniversal has created a global evaluation tool, simultaneously grouping all the indices and publications available covering advice for student orientation with the expert opinions of the members of its international scientific committee.”

The company says the main criteria used to characterise a school were:

*Accreditations obtained by the schools such as AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA, Diplôme d’Etat, and so on.

* The principal rankings in the Financial Times, Shanghai Jiao Tong, BusinessWeek, Asiaweek,
Wall Street Journal, AmericaEconomía, THE, SMBG and so forth.

* Participation in international academic associations, including EFMD, CLADEA, CEEMAN, EMBA, AAPBS, &c.)

* Partnership networks of deans and business schools both international and local.

* Studies and websites recognised in the education and university world.

All this information was then submitted to a committee composed of 12 members: nine academic experts, the chief executive of SMBG, the Eduniversal international coordinator and a representative of the Academic Council of the United Nations system.

By definition, Eduniversal says, the official selection is not a ranking but an indication of the international and local influence of a business school. It says the choices students make must also be based on the opinions of all those who currently have or have had relations with the schools.

Up until the global financial tsunami struck stock markets around the world, university business schools were experiencing an astonishing resurgence of interest among students in the famed Master of Business Administration degree.

Yet two years earlier, students were abandoning the MBA in their thousands as part of a world-wide trend. Then the situation went into in reverse and enrolments started climbing again.

In corporate circles, the MBA is still the world’s best-known university qualification but between 2002 and 2005, universities in the West experienced an alarming fall in demand for the degree. In some countries, enrolments plummeted by more than 20% in those three years.

Deans of business schools said the MBA had suffered a decline in popularity because it was seen to be less relevant to some students while business thought the schools were not teaching what the corporate sector wanted. But booming economies also meant the jobs were plentiful and many potential students decided to take up employment rather than lose money studying for an MBA.

The general view in the business schools is that what happens with the MBA is counter-cyclical to the overall economy. The plunge in MBA enrolments came out of the biggest bull market ever sustained and students were questioning why they should do any postgraduate study when there were so many good career prospects in the business world.

Adding to the downward pressure on enrolments, was the proliferation of specialist masters degrees while in some places the MBA was regarded by the business community as stale and not geared to its needs.

Schools responded and began seeking corporate input so the MBA market began to be seen as a two-way street with the corporate sector playing a greater role. Business wanted to know whether the courses were in line with its requirements while also seeking a more generic set of skills in MBA graduates.

Now with all the major Western economies facing a recession, it appears increasing numbers of students are enrolling in an MBA. “The days when arts graduates made good money doing public relations for hedge funds are over,” says one commentator.

“There won’t be so many jobs for lightly qualified bankers or private-equity executives as there have been in the past five years. The times are getting serious, and anyone who wants to prosper within a much tougher global economy will have to get serious as well.”

In the US, the McLean, Virginia-based Graduate Management Admission Council tracks business schools around the world, monitoring the number of students applying for MBA courses. Four years ago, the council reported a drop in business school applications but by 2008, enrolments were starting to go up again – and very rapidly. In August, the council said MBA applications were rising at the fastest pace in history with 77% of business schools reporting increasing numbers of applications – the highest rate in five years and contrasting with 64% the previous year.

“Going to business school is one of the best ways to improve your marketability and expand your options anytime — but especially in this challenging economic climate,” said David Wilson, president of Graduate Management Admission Council, said in a statement at the time of the release of the council’s survey.

Evidence from previous recessions shows that business schools tend to benefit as people undertake courses to ride out the recession and improve their own CVs. So studying becomes an attractive alternative to doing nothing: if you aren’t going to be earning much anyway, why not improve your qualifications so you stand a better chance of finding a job when the economy eventually picks up.

The August 2008 GMAC survey found that three months before graduation, 57% of MBA students already had employment, the highest rate since 2001. But what will happen as the full effects of the global economic downturn begin to be felt is not yet known.

* National educational expenditure per inhabitant;

* GDP of the country where the school was located;

* Population size;

* Number of students in higher education;

* The “local educative landscape”, established according to the number of secondary schools and “the historical dimension of the national educative tradition”;
